History

Immanuel's is an evangelical Christian mega church in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.

With its grassroots beginning in 1982, Immanuel's Church was established by Pastors Charles and Dotty Schmitt with one vision to know Jesus Christ and to make Him known. Through this vision, Immanuel's reached out to the Maryland and DC Metro community, connecting people in need of a loving community and Christ’s redemption.
Immanuel’s outgrew the Schmitt home in 1983 when they moved to the Seventh Day Adventist fellowship hall, growing to over 100 members in less than a year. The church celebrated its first anniversary at E. Brooke Lee Middle School in Wheaton, where it grew to over 400. The church relocated in March 1989 to its own worship facility in the suburb of Silver Spring, Maryland, on 16819 New Hampshire Avenue. Immanuel’s Church continued growing to 1500 members, which prompted the ministry to move forward in 1996 with a three-year building project to expand the church worship center from 20,000 square feet to 120,000 square feet. By 2005 Immanuel's Church weekly attendance averaged over 4,000. Immanuel’s continues to bring people together through music, culture, worship, and a love of learning God’s Word and applying it in action through its ministries.

Immanuel’s reach expanded with the launch of Foundational Teachings, a printed quarterly newsletter distributed nationwide and a successful weekly radio program, The Joy of Discovery, hosted by the Schmitts. The Joy of Discovery encouraged and provided listeners with a biblical and practical perspective on everyday living, which helped further the growth of the church.

The Immanuel’s Church name spread throughout the Greater DC area for its focus on biblical teaching, and diverse community representing over sixty-five nations. From its beginning this interdenominational church has placed emphasis on integrating biblical principles into the services, such as the Feast of Tabernacles, Passover Seder, Maundy Thursday, as well as supporting ministries among the Israel’s Jewish and Palestinian communities, Pro-life and other social issues that align with the Word of God.

Immanuel’s Church partners with community organization such as Rockville Pregnancy Clinic and Bethany Christian Services in support of families, and radio stations; in addition to hosting events to reach the Silver Spring area with IC Fall Fest, a community festival for families, Health Expo, IC 5K Walk & Run, and Glory of Christmas.

Immanuel’s has dedicated itself to reaching people no matter where they are in life and through the power of the Holy Spirit reaches a broad audience. Immanuel’s Church re-launched The Joy of Discovery with Dotty Schmitt in 2015 to reach a new digitally driven audience seeking to understand and live in today's challenging times from a biblical and practical perspective. The Founding Emeritus Pastor Charles P. Schmitt stepped down from his leadership position at Immanuel's Church in 2016 after serving as the senior pastor for thirty-three years. Immanuel's Church continues the vision to know Christ and to make Him known.
